Cheeks extend up and down from mouthpiece, preventing the bit from slipping sideways through the mouth and exerting lateral control for turns.

- For safety, “keepers” should be used.
- Keepers make it less easy for the horse to catch the upper cheek on an obstruction.
- These bits fix the bit in the mouth and tend to concentrate pressure on the bars and tongue.
